PORTAL NORTH BRIDGE

Hackensack River

Muñoz Engineering is proud to be playing a key role in one of the most crucial projects within the Gateway Program - the replacement of the Portal Bridge. First opened for rail travel in 1910, the existing bridge is one of the worst bottleneck choke points on the Northeast Corridor and is long overdue for replacement.  Carrying 450 Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains each day, this unreliable two-track span often malfunctions when opening and closing for maritime traffic, causing delays that impact commuter rail travel from Boston to Washington, DC.

The Portal North Bridge Project will provide a fixed-span bridge that will allow unimpeded marine traffic below, thus alleviating the cascade effect that the frequent malfunctions create. Rail traffic over this new bridge, combined with the new Hudson River Tunnel project, will provide more reliable service for the Northeast Corridor.

Muñoz Engineering is providing surveying, laser scanning and 3D modeling on this major and important project. Additionally, we are performed all aspects of construction layout and as-builts using Trimble & Leica equipment. We have performed track and rail monitoring in support of other trades, and have established an extensive network of survey control points that will be used for the entirety of the project.
