CUOMO BRIDGE/TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE

HUDSON RIVER

Muñoz Engineering and Land Surveyors, as a sub-consultant to HNTB, provided surveying, office engineering and research for one of the largest design-build contracts in the United States and at the time of construction, one of the largest bridge projects in New York’s History.

The new bridge carries 50 million vehicles a year and eases congestion at a crucial river crossing just north of New York City. It features twin three-mile-long structures with eight traffic lanes, four emergency/breakdown lanes, a shared pedestrian and bike path, bus lanes, and the capacity for future commuter-rail lines.

Muñoz provided topographic survey and planimetric features surveying to locate the horizontal and vertical position of the above ground topographic features, and prepared two-dimensional plans and DTM files from the features located. Additionally, Muñoz provided construction compliance oversight–field support by performing verification of total and differential settlement monitoring of pile caps in the friction piling zone and the pile caps supported on rock immediately adjacent to the friction piles.

Muñoz also provided office engineering including commercial management support, reviewing key communications between the project team, the Design-Build team, the New York State Thruway Authority. Muñoz Engineers provided utility research, and worked with local governments for site plans, surveys, subdivision plans, and any other improvement plans that fall within the project limits.
